2nd Annual Conference on Environmental Impact Assessment for Infrastructure Projects

The Intelligence Transfer Centre is proud to host the 2nd Annual Conference on Environmental Impact Assessment for Infrastructure Projects

VENUE: Hilton Hotel, Sandton

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is South Africa’s main regulatory tool. It is use to reduce and manage negative effects of new projects and activities that have the potential to affect the right to safe and healthy environment. EIA is regarded as one of the procedures that actively encourages or guarantees sustainable development.  However, EIA is occasionally cited as a major impediment to growth due to its requirements for rigorous participatory processes and scientific inquiry which are sometimes seen as time-consuming and expensive. Concerns have also been raised about the EIA process’s uniform application to all developments. Nonetheless, this flaw in the overall environmental impact management regime has been acknowledged, and new, more suitable and efficient impact management technologies are being adopted. Thus, the EIA continues to be crucial to South Africa’s environmental impact management system.
